Atalanta's Race

- King Iasus and his wife had a daughter, the Queen named her Atalanta. The king was infuriated that, he didn’t get a son, so he sent his newborn daughter to the woods.
- A she-bear found the girl and took care of her, until a hunter found Atalanta. He taught her hunting and archery, she was also unmistakably fast. One day she left the hunter, and her skills became well known. The news of her talents reached the king.
- The king wanted to meet her. When Atalanta met the king, she discovered that she was his daughter.The king still wanted a male successor to rule, so he ordered Atalanta to get married. However, she did it her way. She said that whoever could beat her in a footrace can marry her, but the loser loses his head.
- There was this one contender, Hippomenes, who asked the goddess Aphrodite for help to beat Atalanta. Aphrodite gave him 3 golden apples to distract Atalanta.
- During the race he rolled the apples one at a time and while she was distracted Hippomenes ran past her and won.
- After he was married to Atalanta he forgot to thank Aphrodite. Aphrodite was livid that she wasn’t honored properly, so she asked Hera to turn the couple into lions.
