  • "But somehow, Dad's friend Reverend Robinson has managed to keep his church for being destroyed. We rode our bikes to it this morning.(8)

  • "As I rode, I tried not look around at them, but I couldn't help seeing, collecting their general misery("10)
  • "Keith only tricked me into bleeding once , and I beat the hell out of him for it. I didn't fight much when I was little because it hurt me so. I felt every blow I struck as if I'd hit myself. So when I did fight, I set out to hurt the other kid more thank kids usually hurt one another..they all earned what I did to them 2 or 3x over."(11)

  • Butler describes the setting in the novel as a confined small community who tries with all their efforts to protect themselves from the chaos outside of their gates. Even when the very few have to leave to go to work or get parashiables.

  • "I try not to let my face show anything,but he's good at reading me. sometimes people say I look angry or grim .Better to have them think that anything than let them know just how easy it is to hurt me?(12)
  • Butler describes Lauren from the evidence above as compassionate empath who doesn't enjoy receiving others pain. She is also very passionate and protective of herself, from the mistreatment or manipulation of others 
  • What does the character dislike
  • "I haven't shared bleeding with anyone since I was twelve and got my first period. what I relief that was. I just wish all the rest of it had gone too."(11)
  • Butler uses the sex scene in the novel to express thee deep and intimate love between the couple. Although the two lovebirds never actually say I love you, the love between them is evident and very strong.
  • what actions do the character take 
  • "I thanked them all for the outgoing efforts to find my father. Then..well I talked about perseverance. I preached a sermon about perseverance if an unordained kid can be said to preach a sermon.. So I preached from luke, chapter 18:1, the parable of the importunate widow."(121)
  • "I was afraid..the service would become an impromptu funeral. When I stood up it ,wasn't to say a few words. I meant to give them something they could take home--something that might have them feel like enough had been said today ." (121)
  • Butler gives her audience a glimpse inside of Lauren's head to reveal the true nature of her character. Lauren appears to be an angry or upset person on the outside, but on the inside she is an innocent young girl who doesn't want to be hurt like the rest of the world.
  • In Butler's characterization of Lauren her deep dislike for her condition of hyperempathy is being expressed. She desperately wishes to normal like her 4 other siblings and the rest of the community
  • Butler emphasizes on the strength and leadership of Lauren by allowing her character to pull her community together in the absence of her father. Young Lauren not only preaches about perseverance but denounces the claims of her father's death.
