  • F. Scott Fitzgerald : "In The Great Gatsby, I demonstrate the theme of the American Dream which depicts the desire for the opportunity to succeed or the desire for money and possessions. The American Dream was strongly manifested by Jay Gatsby and several other characters in the novel. A part of Gatsby’s American Dream was to be wealthy and no longer be a poor farmer which he achieved by bootlegging alcohol and changing his name once he moved to West Egg. "
  • F. Scott Fitzgerald: "Once he was living in West Egg, his dream was to obtain his love interest, Daisy Buchanan. I want readers to understand that the American Dream blinds Americans from reality which makes it hard for them to achieve their goals and leads to the American Dream becoming almost unattainable. It is represented by the green light that Jay Gatsby reaches out toward on the dock. The light simultaneously symbolizes Gatsby's love for Daisy, money, and the American Dream."
  • F. Scott Fitzgerald: "During the novel, Jay Gatsby, the main character, fights to have a life of satisfaction. He believes he can not be fully satisfied until he and Daisy are together. He throws extravagant parties to try to lure her to him and he also promises to take the blame for Daisy’s crime to show his devotion and commitment to her. However, he was so distracted by his love for Daisy that he left no thought for the reality of the situation. In which there was a chance that he and Daisy would not end up together, so by the end of the novel, Daisy ended up reconciling with her husband, Tom Buchanan, instead of sticking by Gatsby."
