- With Christmas around the corner, Seth decided to go shopping for a Christmas tree to celebrate with his family. Seth sees a tree and wants to find out how tall it is. Seth knows he's standing 8 feet away from the tree and that the angle of elevation from the ground to the top of the tree measures 60 degrees. Seth uses trig and comes up with the equation 8 x Tan60. Seth finds out that the tree is 13.9 feet tall.
- Seth likes the tree but keeps looking around. He sees another tree and wants to know the distance between him and the star of the tree. He knows that the tree is 16 feet tall and that the angle of depression from the star to him is 75 degrees. He uses trig to come up with the equation 16 / Sin75 and figures out that the distance between him and the top of the tree is 16.6 feet.
- Seth decides that he wants to take the second tree home. Seth gets bored waiting in traffic and decides that he wants to find the angle of elevation from him to the bird. He knows that his car is 6 feet wide and that the distance between him and the bird is 80 feet. Seth comes up with the equation cos⁻¹(6/80) and finds out that that the angle of elevation from him to the bird is 85.7 degrees.
- Seth finally gets home and sets up the tree he bought. Seth wants to find the distance from his shoes to the presents on the ground. Sitting down Seth is 5 feet tall, he also knows that the distance between the top of his head and the presents is 12 feet. Using the Pythagorean theorem Seth comes up with the equation 5² + B² = 12². Seth figures out that the distance from his feet to the presents is 10.9 feet.
- Finally, Seth celebrates Christmas with his family.
