  • Fall of Athens (404 BC): After the defeat of Aegospotamus, Spartan troops besieged Athens. The city eventually surrendered and lost its position as the dominant power in Greece. Sparta established an oligarchic regime in Athens known as the Thirty Tyrants, which led to a period of oppression and internal violence.
  • Peace of Antalcidas (387 BC): This peace treaty, negotiated by King Antalcidas of Sparta, officially ended the Peloponnesian Wars. The treaty required all Greek cities, including Athens, to submit to Spartan rule and recognize Spartan hegemony in Greece. That treaty marked the end of the era of Athenian supremacy and the rise of Spartan power in the region.
  • Decline of Sparta and Rise of Thebes (371-362 BC): After the Peloponnesian Wars, Sparta became the dominant power in Greece. However, his reign did not last long. The city-state of Thebes, led by Epaminondas, challenged Spartan power and won important victories such as the Battle of Leuctra in 371 BC. and the Battle of Mantinea in 362 BC. These battles weakened Sparta and allowed Thebes to become the new leading power in Greece.
