  • Invasion in Kalinga
  • Ashoka was considered a cruel person with a temper when he was younger. His kingdom stretched from Pakistan and Afghanistan in the west to Assam and and Bangladesh in the East, and as far as Kerala and Andhra Pradesh in the South.
  • Realization
  • Ashoka expanded his empire by force. Within 8 years of ascending the throne, Ashoka expanded his empire to regions in Iran and Persia. The kingdom of Kalinga was the last part of India to resist Ashoka's Control.
  • Ashoka Adopts Buddhism
  • Wow!
  • Ashoka invaded Kalinga after they refused to bow down to him. It is said that 100,000 Kalinga soldiers died, and 10,000 of Ashoka's men died in this battle.
  • Change in Heart
  • Ashoka saw all of the damage he had done and all the destruction he had caused. Ashoka became remorseful as he saw the destruction the war had caused and witnessed the defeated Kalingans being lead into slavery.
  • Ashoka later saw a Buddhist monk meditating in a street amid the chaos and destruction and was inspired by how such a man, who had nothing, could appear so happy.
  • What is certain is that soon after his conquest of Kalinga and his encounter with a Buddhist monk, Ashoka became a Buddhist. He renounced war and began a reign of peace and nonviolence. Ashoka encouraged his subjects to become Buddhists, but allowed religious freedom. Ashoka also had many temples built throughout India.
