- A twelve year old boy named Zane Dupree lives with his mother in New Hampshire. His mother wants him to know more about his father, and so she finds out about someone in New Orleans. He has a great-grandmother there, in which raised his father. So she lets Zane know that he will be going to New Orleans to visit her. He didn't want to go, but he ended up going and went with his dog Bandy. There they were unknowingly going to face something that was also headed there.
- Finding safety

- The unexpected
- Miss Trissy is frightened because of the coming of the storm. So she and Zane go to the church for guidance, and there Pastor Daniel offers them a ride in a van. They're stuck in traffic and the Dobermans dog frightens Bandy, who leaps from the van. Zane goes after Bandy and are led back to Miss Trissy's home. Soon enough the hurricane strikes. Power goes out and the phone lines go down. Zane and Bandy stayed there and spend their time listening to the storm. The next morning there is a huge booming noise of the levees being broken. Water surges into the house and they both go into the attic. The attic was high up so Zane had set a wooden chair on the top of the kitchen table. Once in Zane breaks out a roof vent to get more air. Doing so he loses consciousness.
- The truth
- Zane and Bandy are rescued by Malvina a black skinny girl who is about the age of Zane, and a musician who they call Tru. They both are survivors, paddling in Tru's green canoe searching for safety. On their way, they see other survivors, floating bodies, but no sign of help. Finally they make it to a school-turned-refuge, were they encounter the drug lord, Dylan Toomey. Zane finds out that Malvina's mom is an addict that is in rehab, and Toomey is her supplier. He wants to control her in order for her not to tell others what he does. They then leave. During the canoe ride, Tru's foot is injured. They ask for aid in an upscale neighborhood, but Tru knows that black strangersare not welcomed.
- At a mansion in that neighborhood, they come across an armed security team. The leader holds them at gunpoint and accuses them of being looters. No harm came to them, though as they went back to the canoe, they only go back to find that the canoe was stolen. Tru decides that they must go to the Superdome. Tru's injured foot was getting worse. He urges both Zane and Malvina to leave him behind and go find Zane's cousin, Belinda (which is at the Superdome), but they deny to do so. On their way there, Malvina entered a storefront building to find a wheeled office chair, which they use to push Tru all the way there. Toomey tried to grab Malvina, but wasn't able to, and they then realized that they will need to cross a bridge out of the city. A police stops them.
- Malvina refuses to acknowledge the warnings given by the police man. He brandishes a shotgun and Bandy feels threatened so he jumps. He's shot. Belinda (who is a vet tech) arrives and takes them to her animal shelter. She saves Bandy and aids Tru. Belinda tells Zane the story about his father, Gerald, and his uncle, James. On a playground James had found a gun, Gerald tried to take it away, but the gun went off and killed James. Gerald felt guilty and so he ran away. Zane is glad to now know about his family. Zane's mom gets there and takes him home. Years later Miss Trissy lives with them, Toomey was killed, and Belinda is know Malvina's guardian. Tru is finally back on the road playing with bands and Zane is now happy of where he comes from.
