  • The King was short of money. Many aristocrats refused to pay him a land tax that was suggested. The Church refused to help King Louis XVI too!
  • We do be running out of money tho...
  • We ain't helping no one
  • To get new taxes, the King called a meeting of the Estates-General. This was made up of 300 Clergy, 291 Aristocrats and 610 of the Third Estate.
  • The Third Estate was mainly made up of middle-class lawyers. They were supported by some nobles and clergy.
  • The Third Estate gave the King a list of demands, including a written constitution which limited the King’s power. The their stated also wanted a say in running the countryCountry!
  • The King wouldn’t listen to their demands! The Third Estatechanged its name to the ‘National Assembly’.
  • The King also shut the National Assembly out its meeting place. It gathered in a nearby tennis court, where they made the ‘tennis court oath’ – to stay together until a constitution was agreed by the King!
