  • No longer mourn for me when I'm dead.'' This line means the Bard prompts his beloved, the Fair Youth, not to grieve for him when he dies. The speaker argues that this will only bring misery and pain. In regards to that the speaker prioritizes the lovers happiness above any desire the speaker might have to be honored in his memory. The poem treats this as a romantic gesture.
  • Than you shall hear the surly sullen bell. This line is telling everyone that the speaker fled. Thisreferences the chiming of bells at funerals during the Renaissance. This was a way of paying tribute to a persons life. It was also considered a signal for prayer. It is significant to the poem because then the speakers goes on next about leaving the horrible world and uses the example ''vilest worms'' which refers to him being buried.
  • Alliteration is present in this poem. The purpose of alliteration is to provide an audible pulse that gives a piece of writing a lyrical or emotive effect. Two specific examples are ''surly sullen bell and warning to the world and others'' this use of alliteration emphasizes important ideas in the poem. It also draws the audience to further listen to the content of the text.
