Storyboard Tekst

  • I think heroism is about sacrifice. My dad was a soldier during World War 2, and he was a part of the battle at Normandy. Many soldiers died, including his friends and leaders, but he kept going, even though he knew he could die too. He put everyone else's life before his own to protect the us.
  • He also doesn't consider himself a hero at all. He doesn't want to be called brave, he was just doing what he had to to help. That's very different from Beowulf, who was focused on winning so he could be recognized for his accomplishments.
  • So if you don't think success while in battle is what's most heroic, then what is?
  • Exactly. Soldiers at war are so young, and they know they probably won't make it, but they are doing what they can for their country. Even though the battle of Normandy ultimately was successful, my dad would've still been a hero in my eyes even if it wasn't because of the sacrifice that he payed. Being a hero doesn't require winning, but it does require giving up a lot to become one.
  • I see what you're saying. Even though Beowulf did put himself in danger during the battles, he was still focused on his own success and what it would mean to him. He didn't even think about the implications of his sacrifice at all, instead throwing himself in danger hoping he would win for the glory of it all.
