- I became queen after the death of my older brother, King Kalakua.
- It all happened so fast......
- The people of Hawaii look to me for solutions an guidance and soon, that's what i would need.
- I became queen in 1891 and it was a lot of responsibility.

- I am Sanford.B.Dole from the U.S here to tell you to resign as queen , for we plan to annex Hawaii.

- When Liliuokalani tried to restore these powers, a U.S. military-backed coup overthrew her in 1893 and they formed a transitional government.
- Hawaii was claimed as a republic in 1894. Liliuokalani signed a formal abdication in 1895.
- Yet she still continued to appeal to the U.S. President Grover Cleveland for reinstatement, without success. The United States annexed Hawaii in 1898.
