- 2010 in Tunisia, Mohamed Bouazizi was a 26 year old university graduate he was forced to sell fruits and vegetables on the streets of Sidi Bouzid was approached by Tunisian police because of his unlicensed cart. They confiscated his goods and publically humiliated him. Officials refused to take his complaints of harassment seriously
- But that's not fair! This is harassment!
- So unfortunately, on Dec 17th Mohamed stood in front of the municipal office and set himself on fire. Then on January 4th he passed away due to his injuries.
- WE DON'T WANT BEN ALI WE WANT BREAD AND WATER!
- His death sparked a the Tunisian revolution, people started protesting against corruption, poverty, political repression and no press freedom. The Tunisian government attracted international criticism when dozens of protesters were killed in clashes. January 13 President Ben Ali appeared on national tv promised to not run for presidency again after 23 years in office. lots of things changed food prices, internet restrictions and police could only act in self defense. Ben Ali fled the country Jan 14th a state of emergency was declared government dissolved legislative elections would be held in 6 months after Tunisia people joined the protests in the MENA region like Algeria,Egypt,Syria,Libya, Sudan, Etc.
