- The book takes place from September, 1943 and May, 1945 and World War II in Copenhagen and Gilleleje, Denmark. Mrs. Johansen took Ellen and her daughters to Uncle Henrik's house. Once they were there, Ellen was reunited with her parents. The Johansens faked Annemarie's Great Aunt Birte's death. They used a fake coffin and filled it up with food, warm clothes and blankets. Next, the packet that Peter gave to Mr.Rosen was then given to Annemarie to bring to Uncle Henrik in a basket. Annemarie didn't know that it contained a handkerchief which made the soldiers' guard dogs lose their sense of smell. They couldn't figure out where the Rosens and the remaining Jews were on the boat. Finally, they were all loaded in the boat and taken home to Sweden where they can all be safe.
