- Queen Elizabeth Tudor died in 1603.Died with no heir.James I was made king but did not work with parliament. He believed in the divine right of kings, which made conflict with parliament.

- Charles I believed in the divine right of kings.Parliament tried to limit the kings power.Limit his ability to tax, imprison citizens and quarter troops.Upset puritans by imposing ritual on church of England.Then the civil war starts

- Charles II was made king and wasnt a threat to parliament because he didnt believe in divine right of kings. Monarchy was restored. James II become king 25 years later.Parliament was worried about being openly catholic.
- English nobles encouraged William and Mary of orange to take over/rule. James II fled to France when he realized he had little support from England. William and Mary offered throne and accepted.
- Bill of rights laid foundation for constitutional monarchy. Monarchy and Parliament ruled together and destroyed theory of divine right of kings.
