- Holden tells a story that happened to him last Christmas. After being expelled from his fourth school, he explains that he has a few days to kill before going back home. He leaves the school early and gets a room at a hotel in New York.
- Climax
- There he ends up feeling even more lonely after spending time in clubs and bars. We find out that he is still depressed after his little brother died and finds himself guilty.
- Falling Action
- After Holden gets beaten up by a pimp named Maurice, he goes on a date with Sally Hayes. There, he expresses the fact that he wants to run away to Massachussetts with her, but gets rejected. He goes home to Phoebe and informs her that he dreams to be ‘the catcher in the rye’ and save kids from losing their innocence.
- Resolution
- Ultimately,Holden decides to hitchhike out west. He informs Phoebe and meets her in frontof the museum. She shows up with a suitcase and tells her brother that she’s going with him. Holden refuses andupsets Phoebe.
- After taking Phoebe to the park and the zoo, Holden buys her a carousel ticket. As she rides along, he bursts into tears, realizing that is what makes him happy.
- At the end of the novel, Holden returns to the present, revealing that he is getting medical treatment. He plans to go back to school in September and even misses phonies.
