- On the day before Christmas, Papa returns from his railroad job. On Christmas Eve, amidst the holiday scents of foods baking and sizzling, Papa, Uncle Hammer, Big Ma, Mr. Morrison all tell stories of their youths and their families. We love family stories!
- The Granger's, a white family want to take the land from the Logan's which causes tension between the two families. Mr. Jamison, a very good friend of Papa's was always willing to help. When he heard about the shopping in Vicksburg, he said he would back up all the other families credit. This helped the Logan's very much because it continued their plan to boycott and close The Wallace Store.
- After Stacey and T.J's fight at the Wallace's , mama tries to convince the people of the town to boycott the Wallace's store. With the backing of the white lawyer, Mr. Jamison , Papa and Mr. Morrison travel to Vicksburg to buy supplies for many families.
