  • Gaius Julius Caesar, his father, and Aurelia Cotta, his mother, were present when Caesar was born on or about July 13, 100 B.C. He was also Gaius Marius' nephew, a well-known Roman general. Caesar claimed to be a descendant of the goddess Venus through the Trojan prince Aeneas and his son Iulus, tracing his ancestry to the beginnings of Rome. Caesar's family was not rich nor really powerful in Roman politics, despite the fact that he was reputedly descended from nobles.
  • At age 16, Caesar took control of his family after his father unexpectedly passed away in 85 B.C. He did so in the midst of a civil war raging between his uncle Marius and the Roman emperor Lucius Cornelius Sulla. He wed Cornelia, the ally of Marius' daughter, in 84 B.C. Julia, a girl, was the only child that Caesar and Cornelia had. Sulla, who had won in the civil war in 82 B.C., commanded Caesar to divorce Cornelia. Caesar resisted and hid himself. Caesar's relatives stepped in and convinced Sulla to spare his life; however, Sulla took his inheritance. Despite the delay, Caesar left Rome, joined the military, and in 80 B.C., during the Siege of Mytilene, won the famous Civic Crown for his valor. When Sulla passed away
