  • How does the character look?
  • Jude was constantly teased in school because of her skin color. In chapter 4, Bennett mentions how her classmates would make compare Jude's skin color to extremely dark things because she looked different than everyone else, "Said, Smile, we can't see you. Said, You so dark you blend into the chalkboard. Said, Bet you show up naked to a funeral"(Bennett 83/84). The students told Jude she was so dark that she was the same color as a chalkboard. She wouldn't even have to wear black to a funeral because her skin would be dark enough. These words hurt her and ruined her self esteem.
  • When Jude lived in Mallard, she didn't have very many people to form connections with, but that all changed when she met Reece. In chapter 5, Bennett talks about the aftermath of Reece and Jude's argument, "I didn't mean-oh, I don't even know. I wasn't trying to act like I'm somebody special." "Don't say that," he said. "Say what?" He was quiet a moment, then he leaned in and kissed her. By the time she realized it, he was already pulling away. "That you're not special to me," he said"(Bennett 120). Jude loves Reece and he is very special to her since there hadn't been lots of people that liked her romantically. The genuine apology from Reece reveals that he never meant to hurt her and that he actually loves her, just as much as she loves him, even when he was too afraid to admit it.
  • Who does the character love?
  • What do they do well?
  • One think that Jude does well is run track. In chapter 4, Bennett writes that even though Jude didn't get support from her team, she still had a passion for running, "Still, she ran. She ran because she loved it, because she wanted to be good at something,...." (Bennett 89). Running was an outlet for her since she didn't really have to interact with other people. Jude ran because it gave her a freeing feeling and it was something that she could excel in, since she spent a lot of time being ridiculed and made fun of.
