Rhea Silvia was visited by Mars in the temple of the Vestal Virgins. She bore twin sons who threatened the position of her uncle, Amulius, king of Alba Longa.

Amulius wanted the two boys killed. The infants were left to die on the Tiber River. Their basket was saved and ran aground.

A she-wolf found the crying babies and fed them with her own milk. A woodpecker brought them food to eat. A shepherd discovered them and brought the two infants home to his wife. They raised them as simple shepherds, naming them Romulus and Remus.

Remus was imprisoned after an argument with the king's shepherds. Romulus gathered others to help rescue his brother. Amulius was killed and Romulus and Remus discovered their true identities.

Their supporters wished to crown them as joint kings, but they reinstated their grandfather, Numitor.

Instead, two brothers decided to found a new city along the Tiber River, near where the she-wolf had found them. This city would later become the great city of Rome.
