- To prevent being captured, Fredrick douglass dressed as a free black sailor and had "sailor protecton pass". Though this pass belonged to another free man he knew and if it was properly inspected he would be in trouble.
- Oh no they are checking their papers! I have to jump on to avoid getting captured.
- Fredrick hopped onto the train at the last moment to prevent being caught and made his was to the segregated car.
- Then, the conductor came to the segregated car to check the "free paper" of the black passenger. The Conductor questioned Fredrick about his papers. Since Fredrick didnt have any he showed him the pass.
- But even though he was on free land he still had to be carfel because there were slave hunters that looked for people like him
- Sir, do you have your free papers or something to prove you are a free man
- “Yes sir, I have a paper with the American eagle on it, that will carry me round the world,” "
- Luckily, the conducter did not looked too hard and did not notice the picture of on the paper did not look like Fredrick.
- *quickly loos at paper* Ok, enjoy your trip.
- Fredrick Douglass made it safely to Baltimore, New york within 24 hours.
