  • Before industrialization, families lived together to maintain their farmlands. Fathers maintained the manual work, while the children helped out too, and mothers tended the household. Families also consisted of many generations living together. In rural life, this was maintained within the agrarian society.

  • In the late 19th century, the term "Nuclear Family" becomes quite common in society. With new technological advancements, people became more interconnected, extended families are less common, and family is considered to consists of the biological mothers and fathers with their children and a house pet, most commonly a dog. The father as the head of the household, while the mother becomes the civil servant.
  • In the early 21st century, new political and social changes had shifted the view of the family. The idea of the "Nuclear Family" is less commonly known, and now the family is not just the people with whom one shares a kinship. There are many different kinds of families now, whether it is single parenthood, stepfamilies, same-sex couples, and even those who are divorced or remarried. The structure of the family is more complex than ever before.
  • In modern times, the family is quite different than how it used to be a few centuries ago. With technology and the development of the internet, members of the family are rarely together. Parents seem to be busy with work, and kids are spending more time online than with their family, peers, and even outdoors.
