  • Love is not all: it is not meat nor drinkNor slumber nor a roof against the rain;
  • In lines 1-2 of the poem the narrator doesn't understand how love could be compared to something as essential as food and water. The first verse sets up the theme with it's imagery. The speaker can only see love in a negative light. The tone of the lines is pessimistic. The author does this to convince the reader to see love as impractical . The first verse gives a good build to the turn in the poem.
  • Love can not fill the thickened lung with breath, Nor clean the blood, nor set the fractured bone;
  • This line is similar to lines 1-2. The narrator is repetitive in her feelings about but with a different verbiage. In theses lines she says the "love can not fil the thickened lung nor set the fractured bone". The repetitiveness of the first verse in this poem lets the reader know that the author feels negatively about love. This is also present in the rhyme scheme ABAB.
  • The poetic device used frequently throughout this poem is alliteration and irony. An example of some of the alliteration would be "for lack of love alone." In this poem the author uses lots of metaphors to get the same point across . The rhyme of this poem is ABAB CDCD EFEF GG. The author used this rhyming scheme because it is typical for the Shakespearean sonnet. One example of rhyme scheme in her poem is "Love can not fill the thickened lung with breath; Yet many a man is making friends with death."
  • In the poem before the turn the author talked about how love is not everything you need to live . The turn in this poem is seen on lines 7-8."Yet many a man is making friends with death Even as I speak, for lack of love alone." Before this moment the first part of the poem .The tone changes for the reader who now sees that men die without love. The line also depicts irony because of previous statement made by the author.
  • With this line you can see that the poem takes a turn. The narrator starts to backtrack her thoughts and states
  • Or nagged by want past resolution's power, I might be driven to sell your love for peace,
