Professor Pasque and ProfessorStanzler want tome to try to go 8 hours withno tech! This is going to be tough!
When I tracked my technology usage, I found that I use my laptop 6-8 hours a day and my TV 4-5hours per day! How will I survive?!
The confusion...
No TV, no cell phone, and nocomputer. Thoseare the 3 thingsthat I use the most! What shall I do to entertain myself?
20 minutes later...my first idea!
I would usually spend the day doinghomework. I use my laptop for 90%academic work butsince I can't do that... I'll clean out my closet!
I began my 'no tech' day by quickly realizing that I should have created a plan. The only thing that I did plan for was making sure that all of my homework was completed since I use my laptop to do ALL of my assignments.
2 hours later...
That was difficult withno music!Whenever I cleanI ALWAYS listento music in my wireless Bluetoothheadphones or myBluetooth speaker!
I literally sat in my bedroom contemplating which activities I could and couldn't do that involved technology. Almost everything I do involvessome type of technology.
Second Idea...
I wish I could bring my iPad into the kitchen and turn on Netflix.
I guess I'll cook something!
I realized that I spend most of my time using some sort of tech. If it hadn't been for this assignmentI'm sure that I would have been doing homework, as Sunday is usually my homework day, or catching up on someNetflix.
2 hours later...my third idea!
It is very rare that I ever clean without having the TV on, something on YouTube playing, or listening to my music on Spotify. This was a very difficult task for me to complete in silence.
She's not watching TV...this is odd.
Since starting the program, I haven't had much timeto spend meal prepping. I decided to take this time to prepare my lunch for the week.
At this point I was becoming angry and frustrated. I use my phone for entertainment more than I thought I did. I use it to call my family. I use it to block out my constant thoughts. I use it to make mundane tasks less tedious.
I guess I can clean this bathroom!
What is wrong with her?!? I think she's losing it!
After the tub was clean...
Now what can I do? I should go tothe gym! No...I need my cell phone andmy headphones for the gym.
Forced outdoors!
Edwards
I guess that I'll sit on the porch and read. I can also writein my journal.
She finally calmeddown.
I made it 5 hours without technology!
The cash registers areelectricAshley!!
Being at thegrocery store is definitely using technology...oh no!
Every frustration that I had went back to my being unable to use my cellphone. In the digital log, I noted that I use my cell phone mainly for entertainment purposes.
This assignment made me wonder...
Is it possible to livea life withoutANY technology?
I was spinning my wheels trying tofind something to do indoors without usingtechnology. I decided to do something that I don't get to do anymore...read for pleasure and write my thoughts!
Do I have a problem?
After 5 hours I decided to go to the grocery store and realized that maybe I shouldn't have done that! The car and the registers are electric !
Finale
This was difficult for me. I had a hard time wrapping my mind around this assignment when I have soo much to get done. I didn't quite make it to 8 hours but I tried.
Great! Now she can stop talking to herselfand I can get some rest!
It didn't occur to me that using my car was ALSO technology! This made me wonder if this exercise is really possible for a person like me to complete. . .
I had no idea what to do with myself and I got so agitated that I unintentionally sabotaged myself.
Am I addicted to technology?
Absolutely!
I appreciate the experience& having the opportunity to really take a lookat myself and how frequently I use devicesbut I do not think that I would try this again. It was torture!
