- The Thirty Year's War began in 1618, it initially was a religious conflict between the Catholics v. the Protestants, within the Holy Roman Empire.

- Started with the Bohemian Phase 1618-1625, consisted of the Catholic League v. the Protestant Union.

- It then developed into a greater conflict among the European powers. The conflict is divided into 4 phases- Bohemian, Danish, Swedish, and French.

- During the French phase in 1635 to the end of war in 1648, the French protestants caused most of the destruction during this time period in the war. This was because they had the power to loot people as compensation.

- The war ended in 1648, when the Peace of Westphalia was signed. The Peace of Westphalia was a series peace treaties the ended the European religious conflicts, including the Thirty years war. When the war ended famine, starvation, and disease broke out as a result of war. Thus, population began to decrease.

- This halted the expansion of empires and caused states to become decentralized. The Catholic Church declined in N. Europe and the Holy Roman empire became further decentralized.
