- In Prehistoric Africa A man ape named Moon Watcher discovers a monolith which gives him insight and he discovers the use of tools and how to use them to kill other animals. He creates this tool with a bone and eventually uses it to kill the leopard who was at the top of the food chain
- Fast Forward to the 2000s the monolith is discovered on the moon and is named TMA-1 and Dr Floyd Heywood, Dr. Halvorseen, and Dr. William Michaels go to visit the monolith when it sends out a strong powerful signal that is traced to Jupiter which leads to "Project Jupiter" where a team is going to Jupiter and than to Saturn
- Hunter, White Head, Kaminski, Poole and Bowman are the crew for the trip to Jupiter and Saturn. White Head, Hunter and Kaminski are in hibernation pods set to wake when they reach saturn, so it is up to Bowman and Poole to run the ship with HAL 9000, an artificial intelligence that helps run the ship. These two are by far the smartest and most intelligent on board. They make their way to Jupiter....
- The two pass by Jupiter and send a probe out to record what they see only recording it for a little before it lost signal.
- After the two pass Jupiter, HAL alerts them that they have AE - 35 failure and Poole must exit the ship to fix it and he does and brings it back inside and upon further inspection there seems to be nothing wrong leading to them to assume HAL is malfunctioning. HAL overhears them and suspects they might unplug him
- After HAL hears this he orders Poole to go back outside as HAL suspects another failure, although confused, Poole goes out and is killed by his space pod after HAL turns the boost on and let it hit him
