- Oh, look James is here today and Sarah!
- Who is that?
- Look, Edward is back to just stare at us, again
- Maybe he is on to something about Smallpox he is a doctor after all
- Maybe they went to Jenner's place
- Hey, I haven't seen Sarah or James in a while
- Smallpox slowly took over the world in the 18th century, with many catching the disease. In fact 25% of those who caught the disease died. Edward Jenner was intrigued to see the milkmaids rarely caught smallpox.
- What are they doing!
- Edward Jenner wanted to test if the milkmaids who have gotten cowpox, were immune to smallpox. He did so by observing the milkmaids, to test his theory.
- Maybe Edward found some ground breaking research, hah.
- On 14th May 1796, Jenner, Phipps and Nelmes went to go test his theory about smallpox and cowpox.
- Wait so Edward's theory was right?!
- Jenner tested his theory with a young boy named James Phipps and milkmaid Sarah Nelmes; who had caught cowpox. He inserted puss from the cowpox sore on Nelmes' arm into a cut on Phipps's arm.
- After 2 months Jenner repeated the same experiment instead of inserting smallpox into the cuts on Phipps's arm. The boy had caught cowpox but not small pox. This proved Jenner's theory.
- I haven't seen James or Sarah since then, I wonder what happened
- After conducting this experiment 23 different time, it had proved that Jenner's theory was correct. He concluded that those with cowpox are immune to smallpox. Jenner later coined the word vaccination to describe this method. This was Latin for 'from a cow'.
- Well yeah, Sarah and James are back and healthy!
