  • Polynesian religion and mythology which stresses great value on nature and the environment, especially the ocean.
  • The Polynesians were masters at seafarer skills such as navigation, and their religion and mythology reflects their views of the ocean and its importance.
  • They believed that all things in nature, including humans, contained a sacred and supernatural power called mana. It could be good or evil and vary in amounts.
  • Mana was sacred and they invented complicated rules, known as tapus, to protect it. For example, ordinary people weren't allowed to touch the shadow of the chief. The punishment for breaking these tapus,often involved death.
  • Polynesian religion included many God's, Dieties and demigods. The most popular character was Maui, a hero-trickster well know throughout Polynesia.
  • Worshipping Gods involved chants and prayers, elaborate rituals and sacrafices, including human sacrafices, peformed by various priests.
