- The darkest era began in the most peaceful of times, in the most prosperous of land. The beloved queen of Alderwood, Angeline Berwick, discovers a lost forgotten relic full of strange magic. Her uncovering will lead to a disastrous event consisting of corrupting the innocent and spreading evil. It's also the event that steals a doting mother away from a loving child.

- ANG: What on Earth were the ogres doing? Brainless tools just take and cast aside, ignoring what's right under their noses...
- ANG:Are you injured?
- ANG:Then again, I haven't a clue where it came from and I'm considered an expert. It's made of igneous rock I've never seen before
- ANG: Alright, you can help me take a few books down to Herald, Jillian and Peter, they're on that shelf there. But I don't want you near my desk, the artefact may be dangerous, or troublesome at the very least.
- RUTH: Father says my jaw is bruised, and I twisted my ankle...But I landed in the bushes so I didn't break anything...except the watering can
- ANG:Oh honestly, that father of yours is too harsh too early, how can he expect so much from someone so young? Don't worry darling, it appears that it's safer in here with me.
- RUTH: Mother...owww...Snowcone threw me off again..can I come in here with you?
- ANG: Hmm how interesting, I thought my mirror had spontaneously cracked, but now I recognize the symbol.
- RUTH: It don't look scary to me but father says that's exactly why I should be cautious.
- RUTH: He also said you should've destroyed it in the first place.
- ANG: The artefact must be conditioning its environment, ready for when it becomes active. I must report this to the others.
- ANG: On that we can agree, beauty and innocence can be misleading.
- ANG: And he only distrusts this because the ogres had possession of it. Not only do I know this is not of their making, I'm certain they had no knowledge of what it can do.They threw it aside and we stumbled upon it afterwards.
- ANG: Our major discoveries would never be if we destroyed all the things we don't understand.
- ANG:The magic I've analysed is strange, but as of yet there's no indication that it's evil Ruthy. Two weeks, and all it has achieved is steaming up my mirror.
- RUTH: You actually spoke to ogres?! That sounds terrifying!
- RUTH: Mother, what if father is right? The cone is spreading and if it's dangerous...
- ANG: On that we can agree, beauty and innocence can be misleading.
- ANG: Our major discoveries would never be if we destroyed all the things we don't understand.
