- Hi guys! I'm Mr. Sun, and today we're going to be learning about sun safety. I'm a pretty feisty guy, so it's important to learn how to stay safe from me!
- However, unfortunately this layer is getting thinner and thinner. It's not healthy for people and you may develop skin cancer.
- The earth is protected from my ultraviolet (UV) rays by a shield in its atmosphere called the ozone layer.
- There are three different kinds of skin cancer. Let's take a look at each one.

- The first kind of skin cancer is Basal Cell Carcinoma. This kind occurs in heavily exposed areas of the skin like your face or neck.
- The level of UV radiation that reaches the earth can depend on multiple factors such as the time of day/year, latitude, altitude, and the weather conditions.
- This type, along with Basal Cell Carcinoma, is prevalent in southern states.
- Next up, we have Squamous Cell Carcinoma, which appears around age 40.
- The three types of skin cancer are Basal Cell Carcinoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma, and Melanoma.
- Lastly, the third and most deadly kind of skin cancer is Melanoma. Vulnerability for this type starts as early as 12 years old and is equally as likely to occur in all areas of the country.
- This type is typically is found light pink with flesh-colored bumps with pearly or waxy appearances. They grow slowly and are almost never fatal.
- Squamous Cell Carcinoma often starts as flat red or brown splotches which become rough, dry and scaly. If this isn't treated it may eventually grow large enough to spread to internal organs and be fatal.
- Melanoma may develop from pre-existing moles or start in clear areas of the skin. Careful! If this type isn't removed early, while thin, the rapid growing cancer may spread to internal organs and be fatal.
