Storyboard Tekst

  • In the late 1800s, under president Teddy Roosevelt, the United States adopted a policy of imperialism. For the first time, the United States looked to expand its empire outside the continental United States.
  • The desire for a strong navy was one reason the US wanted to expand. Alfred T Mahan stated that the power of ones nation is correlated to the power of ones navy.
  • The "White Man's Burden" was another reason the US wanted to expand. The idea of cultural superiority and the desire to spread democracy fueled the US expansion of this time.
  • Economic reasons also influence the US desire to expand. The nation needed natural resources - such as timber and oil in Alaska - to continue to grow its economy. They also needed new markets - like China - to sell goods.
  • Competing with other nations even led to war. The US became involved in the Spanish-American War after the sinking of the USS Maine and Yellow Journalism. With the signing of the Treaty of Paris, the US added even more territory to the nation.
  • As the Age of Imperialism ended, the US had begun trading with China, built the Panama Canal, added Alaska and Hawaii as states and added additional territories - such as Puerto Rico - under its rule. After imperialism, the US adopted a policy of isolationism
