  • Nice to see you again Mr.Rutherford. I see that you have come to tell me about your experiment that was shown in the newspaper the other day.
  • Rutherford
  • Yes, my gold foil experiment was a complete success. I was able to discover that the atom has a nucleus that is very small. The nucleus contains positive protons, neutrons and most of the mass. The electrons orbit the nucleus and the mass of an electron is small compared to a proton.
  • Crap! Maybe my ideas were not completely correct. Whatever. I'll earn a fair share from my publications
  • Bohr
  • So you see, electrons move around the nucleus in orbits of fixed sizes and energies. Electron energy is quantised meaning that the first shell can only contain up to 2 electrons, while the second and third shells can only contain up to 8 electrons.
  •
  • Newly revised Atomic Model for Hydrogen Atoms
  • Wow how interesting Professor Bohr! I'm so interested that I'm taking notes on your atomic thoery.
  • University of Copehengan, Denmark 1913
  • Positive Matter consisting of Protons and Neutrons
  • orbital shells
  • Negatively charged electrons
  • What the heck is Professor Bohr talking about?
  • Bohr
  • I heard from your students that your revision for the atomic theory stated that electrons are located in defined shells located certain distances from the nucleus. I really found that mindblowing.
  • Yes. I also told them many other things such as how electrons cannot exist between defined shells and are restricted to specific shells; how electrons gain energy by moving to a higher shell and lose energy by moving to a lower shell; and how electrons are more stable when they are closer to the nucleus
  • Albert Einstein
  • You have made me proud Mr.Bohr. Using my ideas to advance the human knowledge of atoms with help my legacy last.
  • During the same year in which he discovered the nucleus and developed a new atomic model, Rutherford also published his atomic theory. However, even after his theory was published, he knew that his ideas were not entirely correct.
  • Bohr
  • Mr.Bohr's theory does not explain how electrons rotate around the nucleus for heavier atoms. The electronic repulsion between the electrons is not present for the Hydrogen atom, but in the case of a multi-electron atom, the line spectrum becomes more complicated. We've got to go for more advanced calculations to explain the behaviours
  • Are my students talking about my theory. They are talking about absolute non sense!
  • In 1913 Bohr modified Rutherford's atomic model by stating why electrons orbited around the nucleus of a Hydrogen atom. At the time he was developing his atomic model and theory, he was also teaching medical students at the University of Copenhagen.
  • Bohr
  • This is interesting. The element number 72 not a rare-earth element, but an element with chemical properties similar to those of Ziconium. What element may this be?
  • malleableductilelusturousnot flammablenot corrosive
  • properties of an element other than Ziconium
  • He also observed Albert Einstein's ideas to help revise the atomic theory.
  • Schrodinger
  • It seems impossible to know the exact locations of the electrons so instead there should be clouds of probability called orbitals in which we are more likely to find a electrons. Maybe this would t suit more complicated atoms and molecules of different elements.
  • The one negative aspect about Bohr's Atomic Model and revision to the Atomic Theory was that his Model did not work well for heavier atoms.
  • I actually never thought of that. You might actually be right
  • By 1919, Bohr was moving away from the idea that electrons orbited the nucleus and developed short ideas to describe them instead. He focused more on solving the rare-earth element problem that made certain elements so similar. Specifically, Bohr was able to declare that the undiscovered element 72 was not a rare-earth element.
  • Hey, I was the one who discovered element number 72 before you did and named it celtium. You better not replace my ideas and take credit for my discovery!
  • Georges Urbain, French Chemist
  • In 1926 Erwin Schrodinger wanted to revise Bohr's atomic theory and model and stated that electrons did not move in set paths around the nucleus, but in waves around the nucleus instead.
  • University of Zurich, 1926
  •
  • Isn't my theory already good enough!!!
