  • 1800 BC The Maya is starting to be established in places we know today as Mexico and Central America
  • The Maya made important advancements in mathematics and astronomy, such as inventing the concept of zero, and an accurate calendar system that is used to guide the Mayan agricultural cycles. The Maya developed the only known system of writing in Mesoamerica
  • Conflict was prevalent among a few Maya city-states as they fought for control of the region
  • The Maya built amazing urban centers made of stone structures and pyramid temples that were important for religious practices.
  • The city state of Tikal, located in modern-day Guatemala, were reigning as the closest thing to an empire in Maya history. For a period of about 130 years, the Tikal people were overtaken by force and diplomacy. By around 900 AD (The end of the Mayan civilization), most Mayan cities had collapsed, no one fully knows why. There are Mayans still to this day. The civilization of Maya ran from 250 AD-900 AD. Our civilization today is different from Ancient Maya because we are much more developed and modern, while Maya wasn't and had to work a lot harder during their lives. Ancient Maya had a lot more impact during there time then we did, such as a lot of advancements in math, astronomy, and writing.
  • Agriculture played a huge role in Maya civilization, with corn being one of the predominant crops. The Mayan creation story talks about nature gods, the basis of Mayan religion, who made humans out of yellow and white corn.
