- Everybody goes in to the buildings after hearing a jet in the air. He had seen it both times. "Squinting toward the sky, he had seen the sleek jet, almost a blur at its high speed, go past, and a second later heard the blast of sound that followed. Then one more time, a moment later, from the opposite direction, the same plane."
- They were told to stay indoors and be careful just incase the jet came back since they did not know it was a misunderstanding jet training yet. "Instantly, obediently, Jonas had dropped his bike on its side on the path behind his family’s dwelling. He had run indoors and stayed there, alone. His parents were both at work, and his little sister, Lily, was at the Childcare Center where she spent her after-school hours."
- Asher ran into the classroom out of breath late as usual while the morning anthem was playing. ”Asher had dashed into the classroom, late as usual, arriving breathlessly in the middle of the chanting of the morning anthem. When the class took their seats at the conclusion of the patriotic hymn, Asher remained standing to make his public apology as was required.”
- Everyone in the community had dark eyes but Jonas and a female had pale eyes. But no one was able to point it out because it is disrespectful to point out if someone is different. "20 21 3 “Oh, look!” Lily squealed in delight. “Isn’t he cute? Look how tiny he is! And he has funny eyes like yours, Jonas!” Jonas glared at her. He didn’t like it that she had mentioned his eyes."
- Birth moms are fed really nice food and after 3 years they are forced to be laborers for the rest of their life till OLD. "the Birthmothers get wonderful food, and they have very gen- tle exercise periods, and most of the time they just play games and amuse themselves while they’re waiting."
- Jonas loved Fiona he found them assisting the old in the bathroom. "Jonas liked Fiona. She was a good student, quiet and polite, but she had a sense of fun as well, and it didn’t surprise him that she was working with Asher today"
