- I wonder where all of the other people are. what if they got eaten
- The story takes place right after World War II. People that have survived the Holocaust are starting to return to their hometowns. The first man that came back was a Carpenter named Chaim. He used to be very tall but now he was very thin and nobody recognized him at first. When he came to the first set of houses he started to sing but he was singing a Jewish prayer. He was grateful to be at home.
- Later that evening a Crowd had gathered in front of his house and people were asking him questions about the camps and what he saw. But he would answer anything. A woman gave the man a bowl of potatoes and he took it away untouched. Four days after Chaim came back another one came back as a tenant. He survived with the help of a farm manager who lived in the woods. The Manager brought the tenant back on a wagon the old man's face was unlike the carpenters his face was very white. Everyone was amazed by how he had lived so long.
- When the Tenant he fell face-first into the ground. It was more emotional than weakness. He was kissing the threshold of the house of God thanking him for saving him. About a week had passed and the town was waiting anxiously to see if any others would return. The town folk was coming up with all different kinds of theories. Spring blossomed suddenly and it was their first spring of freedom.
- Ten days later three more men returned: A dry good merchant and two-grain dealers. When the merchant arrived is upset by the theories, since everyone knew he was taken away to a place of no return. The merchant looked just like he had before the war. Even a little heavier. When people questioned him he smiled and said he jumped out of the transport to Belzec and had hidden in a small town. The merchant had a smile on his face and most people were surprised because all of his family didn't survive
- For about 3 days the grain dealers slept. They slept near the door as if they walked in and just fell asleep. The neighbors said they heard screaming in their sleep. When the first woman returned nobody recognized her. Only when she reached out to the teacher’s house and she started to sob they realized that it was his wife. She had disguised herself as a beggar woman. She went from market to market reading people's palms. So there were six of them.
- A wagon had brought the doctor back. Who had been hiding in a hole for 9 months under a cowshed that one of his patients has a peasant woman. He was unable to walk. The accountant and his son and barber and his wife came out of the bunker they were hiding in. The barber who had once been known for his maine red hair was now bald. Everyday the merchant would walk towards the railway station when asked where he was going. He said My wife is coming home today The trains were still not running. People were still waiting for the tenth man to return. Especially the farmer. The days kept passing as the trains began to run. The people no longer came up with theories. But the merchant would still visit the railway station. After a while people stop noticing him.
