  • Martha Washington was Martha Washington, the wife of first U.S. President George Washington, was born Martha Dandridge on June 2, 1731, in New Kent County, Virginia, on the Chestnut Grove plantation. Her Father was John Dandrige and her mother was Frances Jones.
  • Martha Washington was important because she was a caretaker for George Washington during the war During the famously bitter winter spent at Valley Forge, Martha Washington permanently endeared herself to the soldiers.
  • Martha Washington appointed the army by the Continetal congress. Also she lent her name to support a formal effort to enlist women of the colonies to volunteer on behalf of the Continental Army.
  • Martha Washington permanently endeared herself to the soldiers. Often starving for want of food, their feet freezing in the snow and their outer garments too thin to withstand the cold, she made the rounds of visiting them, providing as much food as she could have donated, and sewing socks.
  • Martha gave over $20,000 of her own money to the war effort, which was a lot of money in the 1700s. Her commitment to the welfare of the American Revolutionary War veterans would remain lifelong. In appreciation, American servicemen addressed her as "Lady Washington."
  • Even thought Martha Washington lived a great life and was extremely generous and had many accomplishments she sadly died many years ago. When she was 70 she got a fever. She died in Mount Vernon ,VA.
