  • Before German mothers wrapped their scarves aroundtheir heads, kissed their own mothers good-bye and headed acrossthe worldto Bushwick. Before the Italian fathers sailed across the oceanfor the dream of America. Before Dominican daughters donned quinceanera dresses and walked proudly in Bushwick Avenue. Before young brown boys in cutoff shorts spuntheir first tops and played their first games of skelly. Before any of that, this place was called Boswijck.settled by the Dutch and Franciscus the Negro, a former slave who boughthis freedom.

  • And all of New York was called New Amsterdam, ran by a mannamed Peter Stuyvesant. There were slaves here. Those who could afford to own their freedomlived on the other side of the wall. And now that place is called Wall Street. When my teacher says So write down what all of this means to you, our heads bend over our notebooks , the whole classsilent. The whole class belonging somewhere:Bushwick.I didn't just appear one day.I didn't just wake up and know how to write my name.I keep writing, knowing nowthat I was a long time coming.

  • I chose this poem from the book because I have dutch roots. I do not know who, but I do know that I have dutch blood from the maternal side of my family. Another part of that poem caused me to have a connection to it is this line: Before German mothers wrapped their scarves around their heads. In my paternal side, I have German roots. Again, I don't know who, but I know that it was one of my grandfathers.
