On the night of June 16th 1775, Americans marched atop Breed's hill led by Israel Putnam (thought to be Bunker Hill), and set up fort. The American's goal was to gain control of the Charlestown Peninsula from the British
Reinforcements
The British were unhappy and thought the Americans were too close, so they ordered to attack by Thomas Gage.
Order to Retreat
As the British marched atop the hill, the Americans would not fire till they saw the white's of their eye.
The Patriots Flee
The first two waves of attacks were unsuccessful for the British, and they needed reinforcements.
The Americans had to retreat, because they had run low on ammunition and other supplies. Although they needed to leave, they didn't until the British had made it into the fort. While escaping the fort, they used the butts of their guns to hit the British.
The Americans fled, leaving the British a technical victory, but morale for the Americans increased. There was a total of 450 American casualties, with 1050 British casualties.
