- Chris, are you ready for the Math test on Monday? I don't think I am.
- Me too Tom, I'm having a lot of trouble with addition of fractions
- Alright! Since we're both having problems, let's go ask my mom so she could explain it to us
- Okay, that's fine with me.
- Hi boys, what do you need?
- Hey mom, we need help with adding fractions since it's going to be on our match test on Monday.
- Okay boys, when adding fractions you are basically joining two or more parts of a whole to get a bigger number. To add unlike fractions, you must find the common denominator in both fractions. Then you must add the numerators together and put the final number calculated over the common denominator that was found, then you will be given your answer. You can either reduce the fraction or leave it as is.
- Oh, I get it!
- For example, if you have 17/48 of an apple and if your friend, Chris gives you his share which is 5/16 of another apple, what fraction of an apple would you have now?
- I must have 2/3 of an apple!
- Thanks for helping us! We're totally going to ace that test on Monday!
