Storyboard Tekst

  • In April 1971, Quebec announced plans to build a hydroelectric project in northern Quebec. It was planned to flood 10 000km2 of Aboriginal Lands.
  • This was bad news for 5000 Eeyouch and 3500 Inuit who lived in the area and relied on fishing and hunting for their survival. Flooding of their lands would simply mean the end of their life
  • Both Aboriginal groups lobbied for their land rights, together they demanded to stop construction.
  • In 1975, The James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement became the first Aboriginal land rights agreement.
  • The Inuit and Cree(Eeyouch) received:5500km2 of landhunting and fishing rights in over 125 000 km2 of land$225 million payable over 25 years
