  • RESPIRATION
  • I'm Dylan, and I'm going to tell you about the Oxygen-Carbon Cycle! It's pretty amazing! For me, it's important because it is the reason we breathe here on Earth. Humans breathe in Oxygen and exhale Carbon Dioxide. I'll pass it to Lily to take it from here!
  • I do the same thing! How cool!
  • PHOTOSYNTHESIS
  • Photosynthesis is the process by which plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to create oxygen and energy such as sugar.
  • Hi! My name is Lily! The carbon in the air is super important to me because I take in this for photosynthesis. Good thing the humans and animals breathe Carbon Dioxide out so that I can make my own food!
  • Oxygen and carbon dioxide are in the atmosphere. 30% of earth is made of oxygen while carbon dioxide is what animals or plants turn oxygen into.
  • These decomposed materials either end up in the ground or oceans! From here, they evaporate into the atmosphere. Then this carbon can go back to plants, like me! Back to you, Dylan!
  • Sometimes the carbon from humans doesn't get back into the air from breathing. Sometimes they die or create waste. Both things lead to decomposition, which creates fossil fuels. This is how carbon enters the Earth's surface!
  • Thanks, Lily! So as you can see, a huge part of the oxygen-carbon cycle happens through humans, animals, plants, the atmosphere, and the ground. One thing we haven't talked about is how extra carbon is emitted into the air. Humans often create factories and industries, which create extra emissions of carbon into the air! Let's listen to Dr. Carbon real quick to end with learning why this cycle matters to Earth.
  • Carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas that assists the Earth's air in returning heat from the sun. So the more carbon, the more heat the Earth remains, which causes global warming! The less carbon there is, the less carbon kept in the air, and the Earth warms less. So, there you have it! The Oxygen-Carbon Cycle. Hope you enjoyed it!
  • Hello everyone! I'm Dr. Carbon, and to answer your question. Why is it important, you might ask? Because it plays a major role in our Earth's global warming! This cycle determines how much carbon dioxide is in the air!
