- England 1914: Joey, a colt is sold to a drunk farmer.

- General Nicholls was killed in the battle. New friends: Topthorn and Joey find a new german family.
- Albert his son of 15 years old is happy: a friendship between horse and man begins.
- The horse injured its leg and wandered into "no man's land" where two soldiers from different sides volunteered to save the horse. They formed a friendship and Joey returned to his former owner Albert.
- The farmer then sold the horse to an army officer because of the financial problem caused by the war. Albert pleated the officer to let hi join the army, which he immediately refused beacause of his young age.
- the two friends worked in very bad conditions and then a man called Friedrich came to look after them on a spring day. both Topthorn and this man died
