- Daisy's Child
- Daisy Expresses Her Love for Gatsby
- Gatsby is a Crook
- “He and this Wolfsheim brought up a lot of side-street drug stores here and in Chicago and sold grain alcohol over the counter. That’s one of his little stunts.” (133).
- Tom and Daisy invited Nick, Gatsby and Jordan over to their home where Gatsby was introduced to Daisy’s daughter for the first time. Gatsby was in a state of shock, never really believing that she was real and when he first saw her was speechless. “Gatsby and I in turn leaned down and took the small reluctant hand. Afterward he kept looking at the child with surprise. I don’t think he had ever really believed in its existence before.” (117).She looked more like Daisy than Tom, which Daisy boasted.
- The Crash
- "She ran out there an' the one comin' from N York knock right into her, goin’ thirty or forty miles an hour…It was a yellow car,” he said, “big yellow car. New.” (139).
- During the luncheon with all of the guests, Tom sees a spark between Daisy and Gatsby. Daisy tells Tom she loves Gatsby and this infuriates Tom. “She had told him that she loved him, and Tom Buchannan saw. He was astounded. His mouth opened a little, and he looked at Gatsby, and then back at Daisy as if he had just recognized her as someone he knew a longtime ago.” (119).Tom is immediately angry with Daisy and decides to force everyone to go to town, his temper cracking as he continues to drink alcohol.
- Tom Says Goodbye to Myrtle
- As it is revealed to Tom that Gatsby and Daisy are in love. To show Daisy that Gatsby is not who she thinks he is. Tom tells Daisy how Gatsby really accumulated his wealth. This information sways Daisy and she proceeds to deny her feelings for Gatsby. “He turned to us and spoke rapidly, “He and this Wolfsheim brought up a lot of side-street drug stores here and in Chicago and sold grain alcohol over the counter. That’s one of his little stunts.” (133).
- Gatsby Watching Daisy
- “She’ll be alright to-morrow, I’m just going to wait here and see if he tries to bother about that unpleasantness this afternoon…All night, if necessary. Anyhow, till they go to bed.” (144).
- When leaving New York Tom suggests that he rides with Nick and Jordan in his car, while Gatsby and Daisy ride in Gatsby's car. When on the road home Tom, Nick, and Jordan see a crash. That crash turned out to have killed Myrtle, Tom’s mistress. The only description of the car that hit Myrtle was that it was a big, new yellow car. - At the scene of the crash, where Myrtle's body lies, Tom Buchanan looks over the lifeless body. We find out Gatsby takes the blame in fear that Tom would hurt Daisy, because Tom was having an affair with Myrtle. Tom drives away after with tears streaming down his face for the love he had for Myrtle when she was with the living. “Tom, with his back to us, was bending over it, motionless.” (138). “Tom drove slowly until we were beyond the bend -- then his foot came down hard, and the coupe raced along through the night. In a little while I heard a low husky sob, and saw that the tears were overflowing down his face.” (141).
- When Gatsby and Daisy arrive back at her house, Gatsby is concerned for Daisy's safety and well being after Daisy killed someone. He hides in the darkness of the driveway until she goes to sleep. He talks to Nick who learns that Daisy was the one who ran into Myrtle not Gatsby, but Gatsby continues to protect her. Gatsby decides to remain at the house until he knows she is safe, “She’ll be alright to-morrow,” he said presently. “I’m just going to wait here and see if he tries to bother about that unpleasantness this afternoon…All night, if necessary. Anyhow, till they go to bed.” (144). Nick eventually sees Tom and Daisy together in the kitchen, calm and with Tom’s hand covering Daisy’s. Nick knows that Tom and Daisy still care for each other but does not tell Gatsby of what he saw.
