  • At The Buchanan’s
  • The ride into the city
  • The Argument
  •
  • Leaving the City
  • Heading into the city, Tom, Nick, and Jordan climb into Gatsby’s car, while Daisy and Gatsby drive Tom’s car. Along the way, Tom stops at Wilson’s to get gas, and Wilson is sick after realizing that Myrtle had been having an affair. When Wilson moves to fill the car with gas he is “breathing hard” and “his face was green” (123).
  • The Death of Myrtle
  • Upon making it into the city, everyone gathers in a hotel room. Conversation initially is about the wedding happening downstairs, but Tom quickly steers it towards Gatsby. Tom then decides to break the peace, asking “What kind of a row are you trying to cause in my house anyhow?” and from there Tom, Gatsby, and Daisy rapidly lose control of themselves (129). Gatsby targets Tom, shouting “She never loved you, do you hear?” but Tom gets Daisy to refute this, and continues attacking Gatsby, exposing his illegal activities: “He and this Wolfsheim bought up a lot of side-street drug-stores and sold grain alcohol over the counter” (130,133).
  • After the accident
  • After Daisy’s begging, everyone stops and it is time to leave. Daisy and Gatsby again go together, this time in Gatsby’s car, and Tom, Nick, and Jordan leave shortly after. Nick finds himself at his limits with Tom and Gatsby: “Human sympathy has its limits, and we were content to let their tragic arguments fade with the city lights behind” (135).
  • At the same time that Gatsby and Daisy rush home, Myrtle “rushed out into the dusk, waving hands and shouting” and would be hit by their car and killed (137). When Tom and the others arrive at the scene, Tom’s curiosity has them stop and see what had happened. Tom pieces together that it was Gatsby’s car that killed her and as they drive home he lets out a “low husky sob” and “tears were overflowing down his face” (141).
  • Arriving at the Buchanan’s home, Jordan and Tom go inside, while Nick decides to wait outside for a taxi. While waiting, Nick is approached by Gatsby, who asks about the scene of the accident, and explains what had happened. Inside Daisy and Tom sit at the table, not touching their food. . Nick leaves in his taxi, while Gatsby continues to watch the house in the moonlight
  • “They weren’t happy… and yet they weren’t unhappy either” (145).
