Storyboard Tekst

  • Fr. Joseph Muffles came to Belize on November 27, 1899.
  • In May of 1900 Fr. Joseph Muffles, S. J., was assigned to work with Fr. Piemonte in the Orange Walk District.
  • Fr. Piemonte died in early June and Fr .Muffles became the pastor. To compound his difficulties the Church in Orange Walk town had recently burnt down and the Mount Carmel Sisters who had been working in the school were forced to return to their Motherhouse in New Orleans because of sickness. A further complication came from the fact that Fr. Muffles knew very little Spanish at the time.
  • In spite of the problems Fr. Muffles quickly took hold of the situation. He quickly mastered conversational Spanish and learned to preach in Maya. Mr. Kevlin, who had designed the Corozal Church, gave his services as architect and building gratis; the splendid La Inmaculada Church was the result.
  • In July of 1912 his Jesuit Superiors transferred Fr. Muffles to Belize in spite of protests and petitions from the people of Orange Walk. While Fr. Muffles was at Belize there was an out break of yellow fever. Fr. Muffles and the students were quarantined at Sargent's Caye which is a few miles from Belize city.
  • Luckily Fr. Muffles and the students survived the yellow fever. Fr. Muffles taught religion and was a counselor at S. J. C until his death in January 23rd, 1931
