- Mme. Loisel's husband shows Mathilde and Mme. Loisel their invitation to the Ministry Ball and Mathilde needs to borrow something to wear. They are both excited to have received the rare invitation to the ball.
- Mathilde decided to borrow a dress a diamond necklace from Mme. Forestier. So that she can look her absolute best at the ball. She wants to look like royalty while she is at the ball.
- Mathilde goes to the ball in her new gown and necklace. She sees herself in a mirror and loves the way she looks. She wants to look like this all the time. She doesn't want to leave before anyone else because she is afraid of judgement.
- I lost the necklace you lent me 10 yrs ago
- But didn't you return it?/
- At the ball, Mathilde dances the night away. Everyone wants to dance with her because she looks so beautiful in her new outfit. She is loving all of the attention and doesn't want to go home.
- When Mathilde returns home from the ball she realizes that she has lost the diamond necklace that Mme. Forestier allowed her to borrow. Mathillde and her husband looks everywhere and can not seem to find it.
- Mathilde worked for 10 years to buy a new necklace and she finally does. She returned the necklace to Mme. Forestier. When she tells her how she lost it and buys a new one Mme. looks confused. She tells Mathilde that the necklace was a paste and that it wasn't real
