- All was not happy after the defeat of the Bull. The gods were mad, especially Anu the owner of the Bull. Enil decided it must be Enkidu to die. So very slowly Enkidu would waste away.
- Tablet 10
- Gilgamesh mourned very much for his great friend Enkidu. And would lay him with gold, lapis, and ivory on his journey to the underworld.
- Tablet 11
- Gilgamesh still sad, wanted to find out how to escape death. To do this he would need to find a man named Uta-Napishti. He would travel to the mountains of the sun setting and rising. He would face two scorpion guards saying not to pass as only gods could pass. Gilgamesh told them he was 2/3 god. Then the journey into darkness surrounded him.
- Tablet 12
- Gilgamesh would meat Siduri the tavern keeper by the sea. She kept Gilgamesh out but he insisted and persisted in getting past her. She let him know that gods keep immortallity for themselves. Gilgamesh said he must cross the sea. Ursharabi the boatman would need to take Gilgamesh across. Ursharabi would pitty Gilgamesh and take him across. Gilgamesh encountered Uta and he told him to stop chasing sorrow. Life and death have already been established.
- Uta Napishsti told Gilgamesh of exactly how he escaped death and what the gods did to him. Uta put Gilgamesh to the test to stay awake for a week and confidently he accepted and fell asleep right away for 7 days instead. For failure he would have to leave empty. Uta's wife would say how he travled so far to leave with nothing. Gilgamesh was let known of a plant that would help with immortallity but a snake would end up taking the plant while Gilgamesh rested in some water.
- Tablet 8 has a conversation between the two brothers. Gilgamesh wanted toknow about the underworld. Enkidu said that if he told Gilgamesh then he would weap heavily. All the questions Gilgamesh asked Enkidu knew because of how long he was in the underworld.
