- GenderEmilia is speaking about adultery in this context, but her underlying message is that men and women fundamentally feel the same emotions and have the same desires. Psychologist Janet Shibley Hyde embarked on a series of studies beginning in the 1980s and discovered that men and women are more alike than different in terms of personalities, cognitive abilities, and leadership skills. While their environment undoubtedly impacts aspects of their personalities and behaviors as they mature, their gender specifically does not have a significant impact on this. These studies seem to confirm Emilia's words to Desdemona.
