- Montresor explains that Fortunato insulted him and vows revenge.

- During carnival, Montresor then convinces Fortunato to follow him by bribing him with Amontillado.
- Falling Action
- Montresor leads Fortunato to his catacombs, tasting wine as they go. In the catacombs, Fortunato begins to cough but insists they continue.
- Exposition
- Montresor chains Fortunato, who is too drunk to realize, to the catacombs and starts to build a wall between them. Fortunato, who is very drunk, thinks it is a joke.
- After the wall is complete, Montresor calls to Fortunato and doesn´t get a response. He then proceeds to cover the wall with skulls and exits.
- Finally, Montresor concludes the story by explaining that the body has not been touched for half a century and says rest in peace.
