- "Oh, its actually pronounced Mikaere..."
- "Good afternoon Mr.... Michael, is it? I'm Dr. Smith."
- Correct pronunciation of name is critical to its meaning, and keeps Te Reo and the memory of my ancestors alive. I feel disregarded and unseen already.
- "That is very hard to pronounce, and I am in a bit of a rush. Lets just get into it, shall we?"
- "Diabetes? That is very serious, isn't it? I've heard of it, but am unfamiliar with what it actually means for me."
- "Your blood test came back. You have diabetes and will be on medication for the rest of your life."
- "What is a beta cell? I don't understand."
- "It means your pancreatic insulin making beta cells are being destroyed".
- "Wait, I'm still a bit confused? Can you explain about--"
- "I have another patient to get to. I'll have the nurse give you an information pamphlet and send your insulin prescription to the pharmacy. Goodbye."
- Diabetes? How did this happen? Was it something I did? What does insulin do? How do I tell my whanau when I don't understand myself...
