- The Conflict in this story is Emily's fathers death. It says, “the death of her father on into perpetuity. Not that Miss Emily would have accepted charity” (1).
- The inciting incident is when Homer Barron comes to town. It says, "a foreman named Homer Barron, a Yankee--a big, dark, ready man, with a big voice and eyes lighter than his face" (3).
- Rising Action
- Climax
- The climax in the story is when Emily buys arsenic for the "rats". It says, “The druggist named several. ‘They'll kill anything up to an elephant. But what you want is--’ ‘Arsenic,’ Miss Emily said” (3).
- Falling Action
- The falling action is when Homer goes missing and Miss Emily locks herself in her house. It says, “And that was the last we saw of Homer Barron. And of Miss Emily for some time” (4).
- Resolution
- The resolution is when the townspeople find Emily dead with Homer's body in her bed, a grey hair beside him. It says, "The man himself lay in the bed" (4) and "that faint and invisible dust dry and acrid in the nostrils, we saw a long strand of iron-gray hair" (4).
